Power outages will occur in Montgomery and Galveston County due to Hurricane Laura

A handful of residents will have to deal with short-term power outages known as “brownouts” due to a widespread power loss in other areas caused by Hurricane Laura.

In Montgomery County Commissioner James Noack said the power outages are necessary to protect the integrity of the unaffected transmission line. If the line fails, all Texas Entergy customers would be without power.

“We are currently working on gathering more information, but at the moment we do not have an estimated time for power to fully recover,” Noack posted in a tweet.

As of 8:46 a.m. Thursday, there were 5,322 people in Galveston without power and 114,798 people in Montgomery County.

Due to the brownout, Montgomery’s ISD announced that its campuses and departments will be closed on Friday, August 28th.

Meanwhile, in a tweet posted to the official Twitter page of Galveston County Office of Emergency Management, widespread power outages are reported and are affecting the Bolivar Peninsula.

Entergy shares the following tip to help customers reduce electricity consumption.

  • Raise the central climate thermostat to 78 degrees. Window units need to be customized accordingly.
  • Use energy-efficient electric ceiling fans and portable fans to circulate air and help residents feel cooler.
  • Close window blinds, curtains and drapes to reduce heating in the house due to direct sunlight.
  • Delay whitewashing of clothes, washing, bathing, etc. until later in the evening or early morning. These activities produce moisture and increase the humidity in the house, making the air conditioner work harder.
  • Wash clothes with cold water, cook food in the lowest possible setting, and resist the temptation to open the oven door when baking.
