Video games will be more expensive than ever. And it’s the fault of the new generation of consoles from Microsoft and Sony – Executive Digest

Games can become a more expensive hobby. Microsoft and Sony will launch their next-gen Xbox and PlayStation consoles in early October, so the industry is betting that customers will be willing to pay even higher prices for games.

Consumers are already rushing to pre-order the new consoles, with units selling quickly after the listing. Both Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and Sony’s PlayStation 5 cost around $ 500. Sony’s PS5s cost $ 400 online, while Microsoft’s more affordable Xbox SS Series costs $ 300.

Blockbuster video games typically cost around $ 60 at launch, as indicated CNBC.

The two console makers, Microsoft and Sony, promise much more powerful performance and better graphics. For example, each comes with storage devices to allow for faster load times, as well as a feature that offers ultra-realistic graphics.

But with those specs cousin, game publishers are expected to raise their prices due to additional development and marketing costs.

Earlier this month, Sony confirmed a maximum price of $ 70 for the games, after announcing the release date and price for its PS5.

“Our own World Studios titles will be priced from $ 49.99 to $ 69.99 on PS5,” Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan said earlier this month, quoted by CNBC.

This price increase ends the $ 60 standard, which has been the industry norm for 15 years.

Microsoft has yet to comment on the pricing of Xbox games firsthand, but Xbox team division chief Phil Spencer said in an interview with Washington Post who thinks “that the customer will decide the right price for them”.
