“Listen” is the first feature film by the actress and director Ana Rocha de Sousa and the narrative is inspired by real events. It is a family drama about a Portuguese family emigrated to the United Kingdom, to which the social services transfer their three minor children, on suspicion of abuse.

In an interview with the Lusa agency days before the world premiere of the film in Venice, the director returned to 2016 to talk about the creation of this film, after having lived and studied in London, having been a mother and having known cases of emigrants who lived that drama, portrayed in “Listen”.

“It is not at all a film against anybody in particular, but it is intended to raise questions; whether there will be other ways to safeguard the best interests of these children and families beyond adoption. (…) The great difficulty of the subject are some definitions that are too subjective in legal terms that make the system [social] very fallible, “he said.

Regarding the presence in Venice, Ana Rocha de Sousa recalled the importance of the festival: “Being in Venice gave the film a lot of visibility. There will be a ‘before Venice’ and an ‘after Venice’. I am absolutely grateful that Venice has the courage to continue and, in an adapted and innovative way, not to let things fall ”.

“Listen” is a Portuguese-British co-production, it was shot on the outskirts of London with a Portuguese and English cast, led by Lúcia Moniz, Ruben García and Sophia Myles. It will hit Portuguese cinemas in 2021.

On Friday, the Portuguese director’s film was honored with the Bisato d’Oro award for best performance and the “Sorriso Diverso Venezia” award, for “addressing social issues”, both parallel awards of the festival.

Ana Rocha de Sousa, 41, entered the cinema through the door of representation, especially in television fiction, such as “Riscos”, “A Raia dos Medos”, “Morangos comçúcar” and “Jura”, and went to other side of the camera making short films. She is currently preparing a new feature film.

“Listen” had been selected for the competitive section “Horizons” of the festival, which also included the short film “The Shift”, by Laura Carreira.

In this section, the award for the best short film went to “Between you and miracles”, by Mariana Saffon.

The 77th edition of the Venice Film Festival, which ends today, was presented as one of the first international events to take place in the traditional line in times of the covid-19 pandemic, after months of paralysis of cinematographic activity, It took many festivals to decide whether to postpone, cancel, or show online.
