Maria Rodrigues Branco was born on February 25, 1915 in the Place de Bostelinhos, in Cabana Maior, Arcos de Valdevez. In the town they knew her by “Tía María Casanova”, in reference to the name of the place where she lived. Midwife and servant, practically all the inhabitants of Bostelinhos passed through her hands at birth.
She celebrated her 105th birthday, surrounded by many of those she saw born, family, friends and even mayors. And at that moment, Jéssica Neves, 29, who was raised for the centenary and told the Jornal de Notícias that she was in a good mood. “Aunt Maria is days old. Sometimes she doesn’t know people anymore, but she laughs a lot. She no longer has mobility. She only stopped walking a little before she turned 104. She no longer had strength in her legs,” said Jéssica. referring to the fact that the centennial “had no chronic diseases, never took medication.”
Born into a family with six children, four girls and two boys, María Branco did not procreate despite having married. He dedicated his life to bringing the world and raising the children of others.
“I have been an employee of my great-grandmother since I was 15 years old. Her children were like her and all the inhabitants of the town and her children were born from her hand, ”said Jéssica to whom the old woman, the oldest in the Arcos de Valdevez municipality, is of great importance.
“I came from the United States when I was seven months old and raised by my maternal grandparents. Since Aunt Maria was the housekeeper, she was the one who fed me and took me to school. I went and stayed there all morning crocheting. , waiting for me to finish school to take me home ”, he recalled, commenting:“ She is very important in my life, she was a mother, a grandmother, a friend, everything ”.
The young woman’s family was in charge of “Tía María Casanova” and the Cabana Maior City Council, headed by Mayor Joaquim Campos, also participated in the organization of the party. He had already done it with a tribute when the old woman turned one hundred years old.
