This Sunday, the Portuguese cyclist Ruben Guerreiro won the ninth stage of his return to Italy, with another Portuguese, João Almeida, to maintain the leadership of the race, for the seventh consecutive day.
Rubén Guerreiro (EF Pro Cycling) was the first to cut the goal of the ninth stage, a 207-kilometer section, between San Salvo and Roccaraso, which ended with a first-rate assembly count. Triumph that earned Guerreiro the leadership of the Montaña award, with 84 points.
The Portuguese cyclist, national champion in 2017, beat Jonathan Castroviejo (Ineos), in a mountain sprint in the rain, to achieve his first victory in a stage of a “World Tour” event.
João Almeida was 19th on the stage, 1.56 minutes behind Ruben Guerreiro, and held the leadership of the Volta a Itália by bike, completing seven days with the pink jersey, to which the youth leader’s white also adds. In total, the Portuguese have three shirts, with Guerreiro wearing, this Sunday, the blue mountain leader jersey.
In a very long stage, with four mountain counts, two second and two first category, not everything was rosy for João Almeida, who had less advantage in the leadership. He is now followed by Wilco Kelderman, ninth on the stage, who beat the Portuguese cyclist Deceuninck-QuickStep 18 seconds, now being 30 seconds behind first place, overtaking Bilbao Armentia in second place, 39 seconds behind the Portuguese.
With the victory in the stage, Rubén Guerreiro, who completed the 207 kilometers of the stage in 5: 41.20 hours, climbed seven places in the general, from 38 to 31, 16.26 minutes behind the leader, João Almeida.
It was the first Portuguese victory at the Giro in 34 years, adding to Acácio da Silva’s five victories, in the 1985 and 1986 laps.
