A police officer from San José, Philippines, died on Monday during an operation against illegal cockfighting, in which he was working as an undercover agent. The tentative Christian Bolok was attacked by one of the roosters, which was ‘armed’ with blades in its claws, and ended up not surviving his injuries.

Cockfighting is a popular activity in the Philippines, which generally involves gambling. Spurs, blades, and other sharp and penetrating objects are applied to the animals, fighting to the death in an arena. With the Covid-19 pandemic, the Philippine authorities banned all cultural and sporting activities and events, including cockfighting, and have launched important operations to combat events of this nature that take place illegally and in secret.

Agent Bolok was in one of these illegal cockfights to collect evidence of illegal activity and took one of the roosters to confiscate. When it did, the animal shook itself and, with the blade in its claw, cut the policeman in the leg. The blow struck the femoral artery and, within minutes, the officer bled to death.

The policeman was also taken to the local hospital, where death was declared. It is with great regret that I announce that we lost one of our brothers, who sacrificed his own life in the name of service. The Philippine National Police regrets the tragic death of Lieutenant Bolok and expresses its deepest condolences to family and friends. Unfortunately, an accident of bad luck, which I cannot explain ”, Colonel Arnel Apud, the local police chief, told Frace-Press.

According to the authorities, the operation ended with three people arrested and two roosters apprehended.
