Miguel Oliveira (KTM) equaled the second best result of the year in MotoGP this Sunday, when he finished the European Grand Prix in fifth place, in a race won by the Spanish Joan Mir (Suzuki), leader of the championship.
The Portuguese rider finished the 27 laps at the Ricardo Tormo circuit 8,046 seconds behind the winner, who added his first triumph in the premier class, beating by 651 milliseconds his teammate, Alex Rins, and his compatriot Pol Espargaró ( KTM) for 1.203 seconds.
Miguel Oliveira, who started from seventh on the grid, made a good start and won two places even on the first lap, before reaching fourth position one lap later.
Miguel Oliveira remained in the fight for the podium until lap 15, when the Japanese Takaaki Nakagami (Honda) managed to overtake the Portuguese, who kept fifth place until the end.
This was the second best result of the year for the Portuguese Tech3 rider, matching fifth place at the Emilia Romagna GP and just behind the victory achieved in Styria.
For his part, Joan Mir achieved his first MotoGP victory in the penultimate race of the season and is preparing to win the world title.
The former Moto3 world champion in 2017, who never won in Moto2, now has a 37-point lead over Alex Rins and Frenchman Fabio Quarararo (Yamaha), who crashed on the second lap but managed to get back on track and add two points.
Miguel Oliveira, for his part, is in tenth place, but now just two points behind ninth, Australian Jack Miller (Ducati).
Next Sunday the Valencian Community GP will be held, again at the Ricardo Tormo circuit, being the penultimate race of the season, and Rins can become world champion.
