Miguel Oliveira and the difficulties in Catalonia: «It feels like starting from scratch» – MotoGP

Portuguese rider Miguel Oliveira (KTM) admitted this Friday that he “liked to be crazier” and “less conscious” about the bike during the MotoGP World Championship races, apart from the Catalunya GP specialty.

The Portuguese rider addressed the journalists after a day of free practice in which he was in 17th place fastest, 1,239 seconds behind Italian Franco Morbidelli (Yamaha), who closed the day with the best time of the two disputed sessions .

When asked to point out its strengths, it revealed a “very smooth” ride. “In the pits I give a lot of information, even when things are not going well. I always give an answer and I’m not just leaving, “he said.

On the other hand, there is an aspect that I would like to improve.

“Being a little more crazy and less conscious,” he said, despite knowing that what riders do every day on the bike “is pretty crazy.”

The KTM rider assured that, for this Saturday, “as always, the goal is to go straight to Q2 [segunda fase da qualificação] and stay in the top 10 in FP3 [terceira sessão de treinos livres]”.

The main problem experienced by the Portuguese rider was the lack of traction on his motorcycle, especially on the front wheel.

The lower temperatures in Catalonia compared to the usual time of the Barcelona race (June) have made life difficult for the Almada rider.

“Inevitably, it feels like starting from scratch. We haven’t been here in a long time. [ao circuito de Barcelona] and the last time we were here it was in a different situation. The team that adapts the fastest to the conditions is the one that will walk the best, ”said Miguel Oliveira.

The 25-year-old also explained that motorcycles “with an inline motor need a softer tire at the front due to the higher speed in the corners” and the ease of insertion of the motorcycle in the curves.

But, in the case of KTM, which has a V-four cylinder engine architecture, “more stability” is needed, which is only conferred by “the harder tires”, especially because, on the Catalan track, it is with the “left side of the tire” there is more difficulty in reaching the ideal operating temperature.

“If the track temperature is above 30 degrees, the medium tire is much better,” he guaranteed.

Miguel Oliveira also said that “it was very difficult to make everything work” correctly.

We have to analyze the information and find the best compromise to achieve traction, “he said.

The Catalunya MotoGP GP will be the eighth event of the season.

Currently, the Portuguese driver is eighth, with 59 points.
