The mysterious symptoms afflicting US diplomats in Cuba and China could be related to direct exposure to “microwave” radiation, according to a report by a committee of the American Academy of Sciences.

In 2018, at least two similar cases were known in China that were attributed to possible “sonic radiation attacks” against US diplomatic personnel in Cuba.
“The committee found that many of the clinical signs and symptoms presented by those employees were consistent with the effects of the pulsed and directed microwave energy,” said the report, published today by The Hill.
However, the report does not confirm that the energy was intentional, but also does not rule out the possibility that it was emitted through a weapon, the publication adds.
The study looked at four causes that could cause the symptoms: infection, chemicals, psychological factors, and microwave energy.
“In general, directed pulsed microwave energy … appears to be the most plausible mechanism for explaining these cases among those considered,” the study noted.
However, the group of experts admitted that “other possible mechanisms cannot be excluded” and considered “probable that a multiplicity of factors explain some cases and the differences between others”.
