Lance Stroll claimed the first pole position of his career, while Lewis Hamilton set the sixth fastest time.

Lance Stroll (Racing Point) surprised this Saturday by taking the first pole of his career, being the fastest in qualifying for the Formula 1 Turkish Grand Prix.

Stroll spent 1.47.765 minutes, beating Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull), second, by 290 thousandths. Mexican Sergio Pérez (Racing Point) was third fastest, already 1.556 seconds behind the teammate.

“I am in shock. I did not expect to be in this position,” replied the 22-year-old whose result is still pending validation after a situation in which he allegedly did not respect the yellow flags.

The championship leader and favorite to win this race, Briton Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), was just sixth, 4.795 seconds behind Stroll.

The session was marked by the rain that hit the Turkish circuit, which forced a 45-minute break during the first qualifying round (Q1).

Tough conditions have even led Hamilton, who could win his seventh world title this Sunday, to call it one of the worst sessions of his life.

“Without a doubt it was one of the least pleasant, if not the one I liked the least,” the British rider said at the end.

Even so, he maintains his aspirations to conquer the scepter since his greatest rival, the Finnish teammate Valtteri Bottas (MercedeS), did not exceed ninth position.

The F1 Turkish GP is the fourteenth of the 17 races scheduled for 2020.
