The president of the United States approached the United States Drug Administration (FDA) and announced that the modern pharmaceutical vaccine has been approved. If confirmed, this will be the second Covid-19 vaccine to be used in the US.

“Moderna’s vaccine was approved by an overwhelming majority. Distribution should begin immediately.”wrote Donald Trump on the social network Twitter.

On Thursday, a panel of outside FDA advisers voted in favor of the emergency use of Moderna’s vaccine. However, no public announcement of his decision has yet been made, although it is expected to be soon.

The US president also wrote on his social account Twitter that Modern vaccines “are on the way” from Europe “and other parts of the world hard hit by the virus from China, particularly Germany, France, Spain and Italy.

According to Reuters, on Thursday 20 committee members (with one abstention and zero votes against) voted in favor of the vaccine’s benefits outweighing its risks in people 18 and older.

After the vote FDA official Stephen Hahn announced that his organization had informed the US pharmaceutical company that it would work “quickly” to issue authorization for the emergency use of the drug. Last week, the same committee approved the use of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine and its authorization for emergency use arrived the next day.

Days after the United States began the vaccination campaign against Covid-19 with the Pfizer vaccine, the approval of a second vaccine would mean more hope for the country most affected by the pandemic, where more than 300,000 associated deaths have already been reported. Covid-19 and more than 16.9 million cases of infection were overcome.

“Going from one (genetic) sequence of a virus in January to two available vaccines in December is a remarkable achievement,” said James Hildreth, executive director of Meharry Medical College, who voted for the emergency use of this second vaccine.

On Tuesday, the US Drug Agency validated the data submitted by the US pharmaceutical company according to which the new vaccine is 94 percent effective in preventing Covid-19 and 100 percent effective in preventing severe cases. The FDA has certified that the vaccine produced by Moderna does not present “any specific safety concerns.”

The United States signed a $ 1.5 billion deal with Moderna to purchase 100 million doses of its vaccine. Around 20 million doses are expected to be delivered by the end of this month, with the remaining doses arriving in the first quarter of next year.

The first doses of Moderna’s vaccine will be administered to healthcare professionals treating Covid-19 patients and to residents and employees of nursing homes and nursing homes.
