Catalan GP: Quartararo places third and Oliveira leaves

This Sunday, Fabio Quartararo (SRT Yamaha) achieved his third victory of the season, winning the Catalan GP, in a race marked by several crashes and the dominance of the Yamaha riders.

At the start Franco Morbidelli, who left pole position, managed to maintain the lead of the race, with Jack Miller (Pramac Racing) appearing in second position but quickly overtaken by Valentino Rossi (Yamaha) and Fabio Quartararo (SRT Yamaha).

In the middle of the pack, Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati) was on his way right into turn two, as was Zarco following a touch between the two riders.

Leading the race, Morbidelli was trying to gain some advantage for Rossi and Quartararo by getting half a second over their opponents.

The Yamaha trio were stronger than the competition and Quartararo was the fastest on the track, even beating Rossi at the start of lap six, at the end of the finish line.

The Frenchman was determined not to let his teammate escape and three laps later he ended up leading the race, overtaking in the same place where Rossi was dispatched.

Morbidelli stayed close to Quartararo until the moment he made a mistake at Turn 1, extending his run, allowing Valentino Rossi to take second place.

Rossi was looking to reach his 200th MotoGP podium, a goal that ended up escaping when Italian Yamaha crashed at Turn 2 with 9 laps remaining.

With Rossi’s departure, Joan Mir (Suzuki) overtook Jack Miller and climbed to third place. The Spanish Suzuki rider was very quick and soon got behind the wheel of Franco Morbidelli, who was already having problems with the wear of the tires on his Yamaha.

Two laps from the end of the race, Mir attacked Morbidelli hard and eventually overtook the SRT Yamaha rider, who would ultimately lose third place to Alex Rins (Suzuki).

The two Suzuki riders were the fastest on the track in the final laps, even managing to shorten the gap for Quartararo, who ended up with the third victory of the season.

Mir was second ahead of his teammate Alex Rins, while Morbidelli and Jack Miller closed the top five of this eighth round of the MotoGP championship.

Quartararo’s third victory in 2020 puts the French rider in the lead of the World Championship, taking advantage of the fall of Dovizioso and the ninth place of Maverick Viñales (Yamaha) who made a race to forget in Barcelona.

Miguel Oliveira (Tech3 KTM), who started from 12th place on the grid, remained in the fight for the top 10 until 6 laps to go, when he suffered a fall while trying to overtake Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda), in fighting for eighth place.

A disappointment for the Portuguese driver who was doing a positive race to add more points to the championship.
