The president-elect of the United States, Joe Biden, announced this Thursday that on the first day of his mandate he will ask Americans to wear face masks for 100 days to help reduce the spread of Covid-19, which is once again increasing in United States. “I’m going to ask people to wear a mask for 100 days. Only for 100 days, not forever.”Biden said in an excerpt from an interview with CNN.
Biden’s approach to the pandemic stands in stark contrast to Trump’s, who downplayed it, enjoyed wearing masks and called for the economy to reopen, despite being hospitalized for being infected with Covid-19.
The president-elect said he plans to use government authority when necessary to issue a “standing order” for the use of masks in federal buildings, as well as for interstate transportation, including on planes and buses.
To boost confidence in vaccines after approval, Biden said he was willing to get vaccinated in public.
Parallel, Biden revealed that he asked the US government’s top infectious disease specialist, Anthony Fauci, to remain in office and join the new administration. “I asked you to stay in exactly the same role”declared the new president, referring to the specialist threatened with resignation by the outgoing president, Donald Trump.
“I also asked him to be my top medical advisor and to be part of my team for Covid,” the Democrat added.
The United States, it should be noted, has already exceeded 14 million infections and 275,000 deaths from Covid-19.
