Autoeuropa will close its doors for a week due to a lack of chips on the world market. The stoppage means the non-production of about 5,700 units.
Volkswagen’s Portuguese factory will close its doors between March 22 and 28. Production will resume on the night shift at 00:00 on March 29.
“As a consequence of the worsening of the semiconductor shortage that affects the automotive sector worldwide, Volkswagen Autoeuropa will interrupt its activity next week,” according to a statement released this Wednesday, March 17 by the company.
“The conditional distribution of semiconductors in the automotive industry, which had not yet caused any interruption in the activity of the Palmela plant, now requires the cancellation of all production shifts between March 22 and 28,” the statement read.
Autoeuropa said today that “since the last quarter of 2020, the Volkswagen Group has created a working group with the aim of minimizing the impact of the global semiconductor shortage in its factories.”
According to an internal letter sent today by Autoeuropa to its workers, these days of unemployment will be counted as “days of collective leave”, that is, they are days of unemployment, of non-production, with the right to receive wages.
This interruption covers all employees, maintaining only those activities that the factory management considers essential ”, according to the internal letter.
“The production of parts for export and the projects of the Die-cutting and Cutting Unit continue as planned,” explains the Autoeuropa management in their communication.
