Alto Tâmega Rally, PE2: Armindo Araújo is the new leader

Armindo Araújo and Luís Ramalho (Skoda Fabia R5 Evo) attacked with force in the second special of the Alto Tâmega Rally and with that they are the new leaders of the general classification, now with 2.3s of advance for Bruno Magalhães and Carlos Magalhães (Hyundai i 20 R5) that after having won the opening special of the race, he was now 5.4 seconds away.
In a section of more than 18 km, the most international pairs of our rallies finished in front, and they go to the decisive day of the race separated by 2.3 seconds. It does not seem like a coincidence, our most international riders excel in longer stages, because in their careers they have spent their lives doing much longer stretches than usual in CPR and this characteristic is maintained, regardless of the competitive ‘moment’ of each one. . It was very good to be able to look at the intermediate times of the two stages and see if there is a ‘drop’ in the second half of stages, compared to Armindo Araújo and Bruno Magalhães.

Another interesting question is that Armindo Araújo did not brake in the first section, in a zone with a chicane, he gave 3.1s to the winner of the section, but only lost about seven there. It is part, but it says well how Armindo Araújo is. As for Bruno Magalhães, he is perfectly in the fight, 2.3s is very little considering the 67.26 km that are still missing. If Bruno Magalhães beat Armindo Araújo 0.1s per kilometer in tomorrow’s first leg, they were almost tied overall. So there is a lot of rally ahead and no one to neglect yet …

After the shock in qualifying, with an impressive exit from the road, José Pedro Fontes and Inês Ponte (Citroën C3 R5) were third in this special 12.9s behind Armindo Araújo, and in general they fall to third place overall, already in 11.8s. of leaders.

It was a very strong attack from the duo The Racing Factory, which took them from third to first place. José Pedro Fontes and Inês Ponte are still at a recoverable distance, but from here on things get quite complicated.

An additional reference to the fact that the Daniel Berdomás / David Rivero duo make, in this Rally do Alto Tâmega, their debut at the controls of a vehicle of the ‘R5’ category (in this case a C3 R5 from the Sports & You team) Thus, enjoying the Final Prize they obtained a year ago, with the victory in the Peugeot Rally Cup Ibérica 2019, they are fourth in the general classification, 16.6s behind the leader.

Pedro Meireles / Mário Castro (Volkswagen Polo R5) were classified fourth in this special, 19.6s of ARmindo Araújo and in general they are now fourth classified against Ricardo Teodósio / José Teixeira (Skoda Fabia R5 Evo) who did not run this section at all good: They lost 25.8s, something will have happened to justify the margin, because it is difficult that it was only about performance. In this way, the national champions in title occupy the fifth place already with 27.4s, a very difficult margin, but not impossible, to recover in the four stages tomorrow.

Miguel Correia / António Costa (Skoda Fabia R5), were sixth and seventh overall. João Barros / Jorge Henriques (Citroën C3 R5) lost just 29.2 seconds in this section. They are seventh overall with 33.1 seconds ahead. Manuel Castro / Ricardo Cunha (Skoda Fabia R5) are ninth ahead of Ricardo Sousa Ricardo Sousa and Luís Marques (Peugeot 208 VTI) and Gil Antunes / Diogo Correia (Dacia Sandero R4).

This first day of the race was also marked by the investigation apparatus in the Chaves stage of the young Englishman Ruari Bell, whose Ford Fiesta 1.0L, due to a technical problem (lack of brakes), as the pilot later recognized, left road and crashed into two rally security vehicles, fire trucks and ambulance, resulting in several minor injuries, one of them, a firefighter, more seriously.

Oscar Ortiz is first in the Peugeot Rally Cup Ibérica, less than 2 seconds ahead of the Peugeot 208 R4 of the Portuguese Pedro Antunes, who has his compatriot Pedro Almeida with only one second difference.

This edition of the Alto Tâmega Rally, which ends on Sunday, with four more qualifiers, promises to be discussed until the end …

NOTE: These classifications are provisional as there are fast drivers driving further behind.
