The president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, greeted the president-elect of the United States, Joe Biden, on Tuesday, declaring himself willing to work with the future US administration in the “alliance” between the two countries.
“Greetings to President @JoeBiden, with my best wishes and hope that the United States continues to be the land of the free and the home of the brave,” Bolsonaro wrote on the social network Twitter, playing the last stanza of the American anthem.
“I will be willing to work with the new government and continue to build a Brazil-United States alliance, in defense of sovereignty, democracy and freedom in the world, as well as economic and social integration for the benefit of our peoples,” he added .
Bolsonaro was the last president among the world’s major economies to congratulate Biden, even behind Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.
Declared an admirer of the outgoing US President Donald Trump, defeated by Biden in November, Bolsonaro has delayed until the maximum to acknowledge the defeat of his main ally in the world.
Bolsonaro’s recognition of the US election result came a day after the Electoral College of the United States of America confirmed Joe Biden’s victory.
In an interview granted minutes before posting the messages on the social network Facebook, which were included in an official note from Itamaraty. [Ministério das Relações Exteriores do Brasil]Bolsonaro praised Trump and said that his government changed Brazil’s relationship with the United States during an interview with TV Bandeirantes.
“Almost all previous presidents called [os Estados Unidos] imperialist, blaming everything bad that happened in the world and it is not. We have moved forward, we have achieved something with the Trump administration, and I hope that, if all goes well, Biden will now, ”Bolsonaro said.
When mentioning a message that he would have sent to Biden, the Brazilian president added: “For my part, and for his part, the American is pragmatic, we are going to do a closer and closer job.”
Two weeks ago, the last time he commented on the matter, Bolsonaro had said that he should wait for confirmation if, as Trump still maintains without evidence, there was some kind of fraud in the US electoral process.
Since the beginning of the electoral campaign in the United States, the Brazilian president has expressed his support for Trump and has made no secret of his disagreements with Biden, especially when it comes to the environmental agenda.
In the first electoral debate, Biden echoed these differences, saying that Brazil must contain the “destruction” of the Amazon, otherwise it could face “significant economic consequences.”
The Brazilian president reacted harshly and warned that he would not accept “bribes, criminal demarcations or unfounded threats.”
At the time, Bolsonaro affirmed that “some do not understand that Brazil has changed,” that the country’s sovereignty “is not negotiable,” and described Biden’s statement as regrettable.
