Germany’s Mick Schumacher, the son of former driver Michael Schumacher, is promoted to Formula One next season to drive one of the Haas team cars, the American team said on Wednesday.
Current Formula 2 championship leader Mick Schumacher will team up with Russian Nikita Masepin, who had already been announced as a Haas driver for next year.
“The idea of being on the Formula 1 starting grid next year makes me incredibly happy. I have no words,” the 21-year-old German driver was quoted as saying in a team statement.
In the same document, the son of the seven-time Formula 1 world champion was “grateful” to Ferrari, the Ferrari Academy and his parents, stressing that he had always believed “that the dream of racing in Formula 1 would come true.”
The Italian Günter Steiner, head of the Haas team, explained that the hiring of Mick Schumacher was due “to his performance”.
Two races from the end of the Formula 2 season, Mick Schumacher is the main favorite to win the title of this category that serves as a prelude to Formula 1.
