Quique Setién’s adventure as a Barcelona coach lasted just eight months. Hired last January and fired in August, the Spaniard has spoken for the first time about leaving the Camp Nou.
In an interview with Vicente del Bosque, for the The country, Setién made some revelations about the great star of the Catalan team: Lionel Messi.
«It is not easy to deal with Messi. Who am I to change it? If you have accepted it as it is for years and have not changed it … There is another facet, other than the player, that is more difficult to handle. Much more. Something inherent in many athletes. You see things you don’t expect ”, shares the 62-year-old Spanish coach.
On the Argentine’s personality: «He is very reserved but he makes us see the things he wants. It doesn’t say much.
And what, after all, is Messi’s role at Barcelona? Is the number 10 much more than a player?
“There are millions of people who think that Messi, or any other player, is more important than the club and the coach. He had enough experience to make an accurate assessment of how that boy and the other players really are, ”said Setién.
It only lasted eight months, but “the experience at Barça was extraordinary.”
«I had the opportunity to experience something unique. I told the players that I had never been to a spa like this, that I was with the best in the world, ”he shared.
