Rock musician Eddie Van Halen, 65, died of throat cancer on Tuesday.

The son shared the news on social media with a statement to his father. “I can’t believe I have to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning. He was the best father I could have had. All the moments I shared with him, inside and out off stage, it was a privilege. My heart is broken and I think I will never recover from this loss, “wrote Eddie’s son Wolfgang Van Halen.

Wolfgang has been playing bass in his father’s band since 2007, when the band returned to perform with original guitarist David Lee Roth.

Eddie Van Halen was an immigrant raised in Pasadena with an ear for rock’n’rol and Jimi Hendrix-style guitar. He was innovative, energetic, and his music inspired a generation when the Van Halen band, which he founded, rose to stardom on MTV. It sold multi-platinum on more than 10 consecutive albums.

Eddie and his brother Alex founded the band Van Halen in the early 1970s in Los Angeles and they quickly became a hit before even releasing the self-titled debut album in 1978.

The album rocketed to number 19 on the Billboard, making it one of the most successful debuts of the decade.
