“Listen” is the first feature film by the actress and director Ana Rocha de Sousa and the narrative is inspired by real events. It is a family drama about a Portuguese family emigrated to the United Kingdom, to which the social services transfer their three minor children, on suspicion of abuse.

In an interview with the Lusa agency, days before the world premiere of the film in Venice, the director returned to 2016 to talk about the creation of this film, after having lived and studied in London, having been a mother and having known cases of emigrants. who lived that drama, portrayed in “Listen”.

“It is not at all a film against anyone in particular, but it is intended to raise questions; whether there will be other ways to safeguard the best interests of these children and families beyond adoption. […] The great difficulty of the subject are some overly subjective definitions in legal terms that make the system [social] very fallible, “he said.

Regarding the presence in Venice, Ana Rocha de Sousa recalled the importance of the festival: “Being in Venice gave the film a lot of visibility. There will be a ‘before Venice’ and an ‘after Venice’. I am absolutely grateful that Venice has the courage to continue and, in an adapted and innovative way, not to let things fall ”.

“Listen” is a Portuguese-British co-production, it was shot on the outskirts of London with a Portuguese and English cast, led by Lúcia moniz, Rubén García and Sophia Myles. It will hit Portuguese cinemas in 2021.

On Friday, the Portuguese director’s film was honored with the Bisato d’Oro award for best performance and the “Sorriso Diverso Venezia” award, for “addressing social issues”, both parallel awards of the festival.
