Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic, world number 1, apologized this Sunday for his behavior at the US Open, which earned him disqualification in the round of 16 with the Spanish Pablo Carreña-Busta.

“I apologize to the US Open and everyone who was affected by my behavior,” wrote Djokovic, on his official Instagram account, adding that “this whole situation” has left him “sad and empty.”

The first seed explained that he already found out about the situation from the linesman, who hit with a ball, after suffering a break and losing 6-5 in the first set, being satisfied with what he heard. .

“Thank God, he is fine,” continued the Serbian, appearing “extremely desolate” for having caused “great stress”, while guaranteeing that it was an action “so involuntary”, but also “so wrong.”

Regarding the disqualification, Djokovic said that he needs to “do an introspection and work on this disappointment”, so that this situation “serves as a lesson” for his “growth as a player and as a human being.”

“I am very grateful to my family and my team for being my support and to my fans for always being there. Thank you and I’m sorry,” concluded Djokovic.

The Serbian suffered his first defeat of the year on Sunday, after a perfect 26-0, when he hit a lineup on a linesman and was disqualified from the US Open, in a round of 16 match of the competition.

After suffering the break in the eleventh game of the first set, losing 6-5 to Spanish Pablo Carreño-Busta, the world number one threw a ball to the baseline, from behind, and hit a linesman, who it fell.

The big favorite to win the race promptly apologized, as he approached the linesman, who was momentarily in trouble, for taking the ball down his throat, but there was nothing to do.

Immediately, the match referees gathered on the court, including the tournament referee Soeren Friemel, and a few minutes later, the president, Aurelie Tourte, denounced the disqualification of the Serbian player.

Djokovic fell like this for the second consecutive year in the fourth round of the US Open, a year after he was dismissed in the same phase by the Swiss Stan Wawrinka, when he surrendered, injured in the left shoulder, when he lost 6-4, 7- 5 and 2-1.

This time, the 33-year-old Serbian was the big favorite for a fourth victory in the competition, after 2011, 2015 and 2018, even due to several absences, mainly of the Swiss Roger Federer and the Spanish Rafael Nadal.

For his part, Pablo Carreño-Busta, who in 2017 was a semifinalist in the North American competition, goes to the quarterfinals, where he will face the winner of the clash between Belgian David Goffin and Canadian Denis Shapovalov.
