He is known as the “loneliest elephant in the world” and his story explains why. For more than 35 years, this elephant, named Kaavan, has been confined to a small space at a zoo in Islamabad, Pakistan. However, a group of activists managed to mount a campaign for the animal to be transferred to another place with better conditions.
Until now, the Kaavan elephant has been isolated from other animals and confined to a small space that does not allow it to move freely.
Martin Bauer, representative of the activist association for animal rights Four Paws, explained that the medical authorization was finally approved for the elephant to be transported from the zoo where it was to a new location. – probably in Cambodia, where you will find company and medical assistance.
The authorization was already delivered on Friday, September 4, after the elephant was subjected to several medical examinations at the site that, in May, was forced to close by the courts due to the poor hygiene conditions that it presented in the facilities.
Although the Kaavan elephant rescue has attracted media attention from activists around the world, the maneuvers no longer came in time for two of the lions in similar conditions.
“Unfortunately, the authorization for the rescue of the two lions did not arrive in time since, at the end of June, the two animals died during the process,” Bauer said. However, he explains that the Islamabad government has granted authorization for the association to return to rescue and safely transport the remaining animals currently living in insufficient conditions.
