The driver stepped deliberately without an attack in Portland, says he has previously marched in support of Black Lives Matter – and is of the opinion that he was only targeted because he is white.
“I was trying to do nothing but drink,” Adam Haner told KATU of the brutal attack that began outside a 7-Eleven and left him with head injuries, three broken ribs and two black eyes.
‘I was not the enemy, I’ll tell you. I was just the man standing there, and I was apparently white, ‘he said of his brutal attack by BLM protesters.
While he was not part of the ongoing protests in Portland, Haner told KPTV that he had marched earlier in BLM protests.
‘I was for it. Upholsterers have beaten me before. I was for her cause, ‘he said.
The one-time firefighter – who refuses to watch the viral video of his attack – said his natural instincts were aroused when he saw a trans woman he failed to rob and beat.
“I saw exactly what was happening, and I tried to get it in the middle – and it just aimed the fire at me,” he told the station. “Her whole chaos came straight to me.”
He insists he said nothing insulting – but both he and his girlfriend, Tammie Martin, were immediately hired by the boss, who began calling her without white supremacists.
“All I remember remembering very vividly was, ‘This is not your enemy – this is not who we’re trying to fight,’ ‘he insists.
Martin – who was also attacked in the first confrontation – said the videos prove that Haner tried to get out safely without hurting anyone.
‘He hung his horn and ripped his engine to get people off his truck – he did not want to hurt anyone,’ she told the station, saying she was also stabbed after she wrestled to the ground and was hit.
Haner said his seat belt came off as he drove away – forcing him to crash as he tried to make a turn.
“Before I could even open my door, someone pulled me out and I hit the ground,” he told KPTV.
“I vaguely remember being on the ground and trying to call her,” he said of his girlfriend.
‘Then I know nothing more. And then two days later I wake up ”covered with tubes in the ICU, he said.
But he insisted he did not “seek revenge” against the suspect in his attack, appointed by police as 25-year-old former security guard Marquise Love.
“I’m sure karma will take care of him the way it should … I hope he learns something,” he said.
He also insists he would step in again to help a stranger in need “once I am fully recovered.”
‘That’s who I am. If I see something wrong, I will be the person to say something, “he said, adding that his instinct to” go in and help people “is what made him become a firefighter.
“Helping people is just my nature,” he told KATU.
The attack – and ongoing riots and protests – has changed his mind about the city he loves, however.
“Getting a drink at a 7-Eleven in Portland, Oregon, is a different story than it was two months ago,” he told WKBN.
