Pompeo will travel to New York to trigger Iran ‘snapback’

Promise that “Nobody can stop us” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told The Post that he would travel to New York on Thursday to trigger a “snapback” of United Nations sanctions on Iran.

Pompeo said the US could unilaterally use the mechanism to impose international sanctions on Iran despite opposition from other countries.

“President Obama and John Kerry, the authors of the [Iran nuclear deal] said repeatedly that the United States could snap back sanctions for some reason and that no other nation could stop them, “Pompeo told The Post in an exclusive interview Wednesday, shortly before President Trump announced the ‘snapback’.

‘Nobody can stop us. The Chinese can not stop us, the Russians can not stop us, the Iranians can not stop us. We have a unilateral right to do this and we will do it, “said Pompeo.

The “snapback” is an aggressive move to force other countries to sanction Iran again after President Trump left the Iran nuclear deal of former President Barack Obama in 2018.

“I am going to New York to make sure that the Islamic Republic of Iran is not able to buy and sell high-end weapons systems on October 19,” Pompeo said. “We will inform the United Nations that we will exercise our right under UN Security Council Resolution 2231 to ensure that this does not happen.”

The nation’s top diplomat said he believed the action could force an already difficult Iran on the negotiating table, and rejected a suggestion that it could make theocratic leaders even more unstable.

“This was the argument that the previous administration made: If we do not sign this crappy deal, then there will be world war … They were wrong. They said the same thing about moving the embassy to Jerusalem. They said the same thing about the recognition of the Golan Heights, ‘he said.

Pompeo called the snapback “the morally appropriate thing to do” and said “the world will be safer for it.”

The Secretary of State promised “we will use every tool in our toolkit” to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear bomb.

Asked if he knew anything about a mysterious fire at Natanz’s nuclear power plant in Iran last month, the former CIA director said, “I did not add anything to it.”

Pompeo repeatedly quoted his predecessor Trump in the White House in justification for the movement and described what it would do.

‘Just as President Obama described it: the snapback is a mechanism that was set up whereby one of the participants states that we believe they are in non-compliance to give notice to the UN and these sanctions will come back. It happens automatically within 30 days from the date we give notice, “Pompeo said.

‘There was a reason for that. The reason for this President Obama tried to convince the American people that what he was doing was not crazy. ‘
