38 percent of registered voters in the July 7-10 poll believe Trump would be better at fighting crime compared to 36 percent who said the same about Biden.
Fourteen percent of voters said the two presidential candidates would do almost the same thing when it comes to fighting crime.
Twelve percent of voters in the poll said they are unsure.
The survey found disparities between race and ethnicity.
The majority of black voters, 61 percent, have more confidence in Biden when it comes to fighting crime, as do a plurality, 35 percent, of Hispanic voters.
By contrast, almost half of white voters, 47 percent, believe Trump is better on crime.
The survey occurs when crime spikes have increased in several cities in the United States.
Trump announced Wednesday that he would send federal agents to Chicago in an effort to quell the increase in violent crime in the area.
According to a Hill-HarrisX poll from July 17 to 20, more than a third of registered voters said they are most concerned about crime in their area since the start of the coronavirus pandemic and protests.
The Hill-HarrisX poll was conducted online among 2,841 registered voters July 7-10. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.9 percentage points.
