The majority of respondents, 64 percent, said that the CDC and other public health organizations were correct most of the time regarding COVID-19. Only 30 percent said the same thing about Trump and his administration.
Fifty-three percent in the survey said that their governor or state government understands the facts about the coronavirus.
The Pew poll found that 50 percent of Americans said the same thing about their “local media” and 44 percent said it was about “the media in general.”
The Pew poll also found partisan divisions on the question, with the severest division regarding Trump and his administration.
Forty-five points divided Democrats and Republicans regarding views on trusting the President to get the correct data on the outbreak, with 54 percent of Republicans saying Trump understands the facts and only 9 percent of Democrats say the same thing.
When asked about other officials, the split was less obvious. Seventy-six percent of Democrats said CDC and other public health organizations were correct, as were 51 percent of Republicans, according to the poll.
Regarding governors and state governments, 62 percent of Democrats said those officials understand the facts, as did 45 percent of Republicans.
Republicans were also less likely to express confidence in media organizations. Only 38 percent of Republicans said local news was correct, and only 25 percent said that the mainstream media was correct.
Among Democrats, 62 percent said local news is correct, and 60 percent said the same thing about the mainstream media, according to the poll.
The Trump administration left control of coronavirus restrictions to state and local leaders, but the White House issued guidelines on the metrics states could follow to guide phased reopening plans.
The White House task force held its first coronavirus briefings since May on Friday, amid spikes across the country, primarily in the south and west. During the briefing, Vice President Pence tried to reassure the public and praised the governors’ efforts to reopen businesses, minimizing the increasing number of infections.
The Pew Research survey was conducted June 4-10. A total of 9,956 responded out of 11,013 that were sampled. The margin of error for the survey is plus or minus 1.6 percentage points.
