Police in Wisconsin shoot Black man in the back several times, causing protests

Protesters rallied after police fired shots at a man in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Sunday. The man was transported to the hospital in serious condition, according to police.

Video that apparently shows the shooting started circulating on social media. The video, which appears to have been taken from across the street, shows the man driving around in an SUV when police kicked him with guns drawn, with one officer following the man closely. When the man opens the door of the driver of the car, the officer grabs the back of the man’s shirt and appears to fire several shots into the back of the man. At least seven shots are heard in the video, but it is unclear how many officers fired.

In a statement, Kenosha police said they were called to 28th Avenue and 40th Street at 5:11 a.m. for a “domestic incident.” They also said the Wisconsin Department of Justice will investigate the shooting.

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers issued a statement in which he identified the man who was shot as Jacob Blake and said he had been “shot multiple times in the back, in broad daylight.”

“Although we do not yet have all the details, what we do know for sure is that he is not the first Black man or person who has been shot or wounded or mercilessly murdered at the hands of law enforcement individuals in our state like us. land, “said Evers.

People started gathered on the stage to the shooting. One neighbor told CBS Milwaukee branch WDJT-TV that the man who was shot is a father.

Kenosha County Board Supervisor Zach Rodriguez was on the scene after the shooting, WDJT reports.

“I pray for that family, regardless of the situation,” Rodriguez said. “What happened here last night marks that we need body cameras for not only our sheriff’s deputies, but also our city police department.”

This is an evolving story.
