A party of about 300 people in New Jersey was broken up by police on Sunday, and photos showed very few people wearing masks, CBS New York reports.
The Howell police department described the incident as a “pop-up” party in a Facebook post, saying police units “continued to prevent others from arriving and / or returning and to check around surrounding streets, because there there have been reports of fighters urinating on the property of people and cars. ”
The party’s host, who had imposed the permit, was arrested and the investigation will continue, police said.
The department said most attendees were “satisfied”, although some were “hesitant” and “focused their anger on the host.” A majority of those present were not local residents, the department said.
CBS News has reached out to the Howell Police Department for more information.
New Jersey has recently experienced a spike in cases of coronavirus, as hospitalizations and virus deaths continued to decline in neighboring New York. New Jersey has 184,773 deaths and 14,021 deaths, according to state data.
Many holidaymakers in the US have ignored social distance guidelines, especially during the spring break and major holiday weekends such as Memorial Day and July 4th. While the summer months may seem like a time to socialize, health experts advise people not to attend full events.
In June, Dr. Anthony Fauci told Steven Portnoy of CBS News Radio the best way to protect yourself from coronavirus is to prevent crowds. “If you actually feel compelled to do so for some reason that we do not recommend, then you always wear a mask,” Fauci told Portnoy. “So when you see situations, when people … are in crowds and when they are not wearing masks when they are outside, that obviously gives us concern about the increased risk of spreading infection.”
