‘Pokemon GO’ How Mega Evolution, Mega Energy and ‘In Mega Discovery’ Work Special research steps

Like Beedrill? Want a Beedrill that is more Beedrill? You are lucky. Mega Evolution hit Pokémon GO today, adding a new, superpowered fourth level of evolution to particular Pokemon, starting with Charizard, Blastoise, Venasaur and Beedrill. The feature is now live in the game, though it’s still a bit more complicated than regular evolution. Let’s take a look at how it works, how to get mega energy, and the special research that goes into it.

The basis: Mega Evolution is a temporary state brought by Mega Energy. Mega Energy, like candy, is specific to the Pokémon you use it for. Mega Pokémon are super powerful, have their own designs, and get their own little sub-copy in the Pokédex.

You can have only one Mega Pokémon at a time: if you evolve another, the original Pokémon will revert to a lame, regular Pokémon.

Mega Energy: You get Mega Energy from Mega Raids, who have to go live in the game right now. Mega Raids are Raids with one of the currently available Mega Pokémon, and fighting in it gets you the Mega Energy for that Pokémon: you get more if you manage to take it down faster.

Shadow and Clone Pokémon can’t evolve Mega, and once you’ve evolved Mega into a Pokémon, it costs less energy. You can only have one Mega at a time.

Restrictions: You will use these items in Raids, where they will boost an attack to all other Pokémon and a bigger boost to Pokémon with the same attack types. Yuo can also use them against Tem Rocket and regular PvP, but they can not defend gyms or enter the Go Battle League.

Special research: There is now some special research live to introduce you to the whole concept via Beedrill. Here are the steps, and I’ll update when we get the rest:

  • Earn a candy walk with your partner: 10 drinks
  • Caatch 15 Pokémon: 25 Mega Energy
