Information gleaned from data from a new PlayStation website has revealed more about Sony’s PS5 release plans, including backward compatibility for PS5, pre-order details, and more.
Outlined on Reddit, the back-end code for PlayStation Direct confirms that customers will only be able to “buy a version of the PS5 ™ console: disc or digital” on their order, suggesting that Sony will use this rule as a way to manage the supply and demand of what will surely be a limited launch stock.
Additionally, the website contains new images for a “PS5 Compatible” badge, presumably for use in multi-generation titles or previously released PS4 games that can run on the next-gen console at launch. Sony has already promised that “almost all” of its 100 best PS4 games will be backward compatible from the first day of the PS5 launch.
The badge is similar to Microsoft’s “Optimized for Xbox Series X” logo, which is already starting to appear in a series of box arts for upcoming Xbox Series X games. It’s unclear when Sony will officially launch this in the same way. , but this latest leak suggests it will be soon enough.
Finally, it seems that customers will be able to pre-order the PS5 directly from the PlayStation itself. This is a big change for the company, which has always outsourced its sales to outside retailers in the past, suggesting it maintains an even stricter reign than we assume.
