GREEN BAY – By the time the first practice of training camp rolls out in another six days, the Packers will likely be sick of filming in meetings.
But that’s kind of the point.
If there’s a silver lining to all the limitations and changes regarding how head coach Matt LaFleur prepares his team, it is that players will be mentally in a better place with their playbooks for the first practice than they have ever been.
After all the virtual meetings in the offseasons, followed by walk-throughs on top of meetings through the first two weeks of training camp, LaFleur said the players will have to go through all the playbook installations twice before entering the field.
“We will have got all our installations, and then when we get to the exercise part, we will reinstall,” LaFleur said Sunday in a media session.
That process begins Saturday on the field, and LaFleur’s optimism about the process stems from the positive reviews the players gave about the virtual meeting structure in the spring.
The assistant coaches have advanced a majority of those Playbook installations, allowing players to control themselves on their own and make the live sessions with their position groups more productive.
“They could hit the pause button and play again and take notes and ask great questions as they did with their coaches,” LaFleur said. “That made players, these individuals, just able to learn at their own pace.”
