The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center is looking for people who have recovered from the coronavirus to donate plasma to help current patients with the disease.
As of 6 p.m. Sunday, 45 units of plasma had been shipped to local hospitals with several orders still pending.
In June, nearly 1,000 units of convalescent plasma were shipped to local hospitals.
“They recover earlier, they recover faster, and generally do better,” said Dr. Jairo Melo, medical director of critical and pulmonary care at Methodist Hospital. “Unfortunately, we are very concerned. We were able to administer plasma when we had few patients. Now that the number of patients is so high, there are several patients who have not been able to administer plasma at all. “
The organization is looking for someone who has recovered from COVID-19 to see if they are eligible to donate.
Potential plasma donors can email [email protected] to find out if they qualify.
