While California continues to bake in the afternoon of a heat wave, PG&E said Tuesday rotating power outages are “likely” this afternoon and evening.
The utility encouraged people to save electricity between 3pm and 10pm and said blackouts could take up to two hours. (Find energy-saving tips on SFGATE.)
If the California Independent System Operator (ISO), which oversees the state’s power grid, orders the outages today, customers can look up their address to determine if their household will be affected. Visit www.pge.com/rotatingoutages.
If your address is scheduled for a power outage, the tool will give you a block number for a specific downtime.
Temperatures are expected to be warmer on Tuesday afternoon compared to Monday, as domestic temperatures climb into the 100s on Tuesday afternoon. With poor expectation of heat overnight, PG&E expects demand for electricity to rise by the day.

ISO issued a Stage 3 emergency over the weekend as demand for electricity increased supply. The outings encouraged by the Stage 3 emergency are different from the Power Shutoffs for public safety that were issued when the risk of burns is high.
Govin Newsom said Monday that supply shortages will only decrease in the coming days.
“On Saturday, we dropped the need by about 450 megawatts, and we expect substantially greater demand today,” Newsom said at a news conference Monday. “Today we expect 4,440 megawatts to be short.”
Because the state expects even larger gaps in supply and demand, the governor declared that residents should take care of outages. He called the failure to predict “this lack of energy” and to plan it “simply unacceptable.”
PG&E stated that outages could continue through Thursday, depending on the evolution of the heat wave.
