The military has already investigated “unexplined aerial phenomena.”
The Pentagon has announced the creation of a task force to investigate “unexplained aerial phenomena”, such as UFOs, which have been observed by the US military, according to a statement from the Pentagon.
The movement continues its efforts in recent years to investigate incidents in which the U.S. military has encountered such phenomena, including those recorded on Navy fighter videos that the Pentagon declassified in April.
The new Defense Task Force will investigate incidents of unexplained aerial phenomena encountered by the U.S. military, whether it be by pilots or in other ways.
“On August 4, 2020, Deputy Secretary of Defense David L. Norquist approved the establishment of a TAP Force (UnAP) Aerial Phenomena (UAP) (UAPTF),” the Pentagon statement said.
“The Department of Defense set up the UAPTF to improve its understanding, and to gain insight into the nature and origins of UAPs, it went on.” The mission of the task force is to detect, analyze and catalog UAPs that could potentially pose a threat to U.S. national security. “
“As DOD has said before, the safety of our personnel and the safety of our operations are of paramount importance,” the statement said. “The Department of Defense and the military departments take all incidents by unauthorized aircraft in our training ranges or designated airspace very seriously and investigate any report. This includes investigations of incidents that are initially reported as UAP if the observer cannot immediately identify what he or she observes. ”
Since 2018, a naval task force has been informally investigating UFO incidents involving its pilots as personnel of other military services and has been coordinating information with U.S. intelligence agencies.
The new UAP task force will be led by the Navy and report to the Secretary of Defense for intelligence, formalizing the work it has done in recent years, a U.S. official said.
Another U.S. official said the task force is intended to be a long-term effort as UFO incidents occur in the future.
CNN was the first to report the details of the Pentagon’s new mission.
The task force’s work will continue to be classified, though that may change if the House Select Committee on Intelligence’s proposal for an unclassified report on UFOs is adopted by the full Senate and House of Representatives.
In April, the Department of Defense declassified three previously leaked videos recorded by Navy fighter jets in 2004 and 2015 showing “unexplained aerial phenomena” at high speed off the coast of California.
The release of the videos sparked renewed interest in UFOs and anything else the U.S. military may know about similar incidents.
