‘Penny Dreadful: City of Angels’ Canceled after one season on Showtime

“Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” has been canceled on Showtime. The final episode of the show’s first and only season aired on June 28th.

“Showtime has decided not to go ahead with another season of ‘Penny Dreadful: City of Angels,'” Showtime said in a statement. “We would like to thank the executive producers John Logan, Michael Aguilar and the entire cast and crew for their outstanding work on this project.”

A sequel to Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful,” “City of Angels” was set in Los Angeles in 1938 and starred Nathan Lane, Natalie Dormer, Daniel Zovatto, Kerry Bishé, Rory Kinnear, Adriana Barraza, Michael Gladis, Jessica Garza, Johnathan Nieves. Returning guest stars included Lorenza Izzo, Adam Rodriguez, Amy Madigan, Brent Spiner, Lin Shaye, Thomas Kretschmann, Dominic Sherwood, and Ethan Peck.

“City of Angels” received decent reviews upon their release, with Season 1 having a critical approval rating of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes. Variety Daniel D’Addario wrote at the time, ‘This series knows full well that horror exists in the context of history – that, indeed, some of the greatest thrills of all can be won from our inhumanity in real life’s will, as in witness the time. This subplot of this show about Nazi infiltration in government is played out both with magnified, creeping anxiety and with a certain sincerity and flainspokenness. “

In the series, when a vicious murder shakes the city, Detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) and his partner Lewis Michener (Lane) are embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of ‘ the city’s first highways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the perilous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Tiago and his family have long been endowed with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.

John Logan, the creator, writer and executive producer of the original ‘Penny Dreadful’, went on to play ‘City of Angels’ in the same roles. Michael Aguilar also served as executive producer alongside Sam Mendes and Pippa Harris.
