Coronavirus cases in Pennsylvania topped 100,000 over the weekend, as the state’s COVID-19 death toll reached 7,000.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 711 new positive cases Monday, bringing the state total to 101,738 with 7,018 deaths.

The statewide case rate continues to trend upward, although locally it remains stable in the Lehigh Valley. Meanwhile, a rumor that Governor Tom Wolf was planning to move some counties to the red phase is false, ABC27 reports.

Outbreak of coronavirus in Pa.

Pennsylvania reached several coronavirus milestones on Saturday. That was the day the state topped 100,000 cases and 7,000 deaths, both totals since the outbreak began here in March.

Pa. He also reported his 1 millionth test for the virus, according to daily data provided by the state health department. The state estimates that 75% of coronavirus patients have so far recovered.

Like most US states, Pennsylvania has seen an increase in cases. As of Monday, the state averaged 857 new cases per day in the past week, a rate not seen since mid-May.

Daily reports, as usual, declined over the weekend. The number of new cases fell to 700, from more than 1,000 on Friday. Statewide reported deaths were single-digit on Sunday and Monday, which has become typical for the weekend data: During the week, reports of deaths in July have ranged from 15 to nearly 40 in on a given day.

The health department continues to report that the majority of hospitalizations and deaths are for patients over the age of 65. Nursing home residents account for about 18% of total cases, but 68% of deaths.

However, all regions of the state are seeing a significant increase in cases among youth ages 19-24.

Coronavirus in the Lehigh Valley

Coronavirus case rates in Lehigh and Northampton County remain fairly low and flat.

The Lehigh Valley saw a combined total of 80 new cases and two total deaths in state reports on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. The two-county region now totals 8,213 coronavirus cases and 617 deaths.

A breakdown of the Lehigh Valley and surrounding Pa counties as of Monday:

  • Lehigh County had 4,564 cases and 332 deaths.
  • Northampton County had 3,649 cases and 285 deaths.
  • Berks County had 4,845 cases and 360 deaths.
  • Bucks County had 6,387 cases and 573 deaths.
  • Carbon County had 324 cases and 28 deaths.
  • Monroe County had 1,503 cases and 117 deaths.
  • Montgomery County had 9,182 cases and 837 deaths.
  • Schuylkill County had 824 cases and 48 deaths.

No return to the red phase, according to the report

ABC27 has reported that there is no truth in an article circulating online that suggests the Wolf administration will return some counties to the red phase.

The health department told the news station that any additional mitigation, beyond the new bar restrictions imposed last week, will be “selective and surgical.”
