Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs practicing pass behind his back

The next crazy toss in the Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes cheat bag has been revealed.

We’ve seen him break the pass without looking, the left-handed shot, the short-gun throws and everything in between. What we have not yet seen is the highly promoted pass from behind. We knew he was in his arsenal when he played with the pitch during training camp in 2019, but it didn’t seem refined. It certainly didn’t seem like something he could do successfully on game day.

He practiced it as the season wore on and before the Super Bowl, NFL Network’s James Palmer surveyed some of his teammates about the pitch.

“He tries it all the time because he keeps pushing Coach Reid to put him in the system,” Chiefs field chief Chad Henne said. “He says to coach Reid, ‘I can choose this way and then throw it back this way,’ and I say, ‘Ahhh, let’s take care of the ball.'”

“He can do it 20 yards on the field and it’s pretty accurate, too, honestly,” said WR Chief Demarcus Robinson.

In this offseason, Mahomes is practicing the behind-the-back pass again during his training regimen. The launch has certainly improved since training camp in 2019 and looks as sharp as ever.

While this play may not yet have been installed in the Chiefs’ offense, the guiding philosophy that Reid and Mahomes have lived since Mahomes entered the league is: “Nothing is impossible until we make it impossible.”

Could we see Mahomes break the shot behind his back this season?

Don’t count it.
