What a difference six days makes.

Last Friday, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes expressed optimism regarding the ability of the NFL and the NFL Players Association to resolve any differences that stand in the way of a 2020 season. ? Not.

“Things are crazy,” Mahomes tweeted Thursday night. “All this time we had and now we are in this.”

His comments came in response to an NFL Media tweet about the clock ticking toward a deadlock between the league and the union on pandemic-related security protocols. If an agreement is not reached, the league would implement the rules and the union would challenge them through an expedited complaint.

It is a far cry from the optimism Mahomes expressed on July 10, during an ESPN appearance: “The NFLPA and NFL are talking about it and trying to find the best way to come back and play the sport we love, stay safe and follow the right protocol for not hurting anyone else or hurting ourselves. I am confident that the people in charge will do the right thing and help us practice the sport we love and do it the right way. ”

There is still a chance that an agreement will be reached. The NFL continues to be a time-driven business. However, the deadline is here. It is time for the two sides to discover their differences and then join forces to deal with the much bigger threat for the 2020 season.
