When you sit on top of the NFL mountain, it can often be difficult to find motivation. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has found a few, thanks to the NFL’s annual list of the NFL’s Top 100 Players.
Mahomes landed at n. No. 4, behind Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson (No. 1), Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson (No. 2) and Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald (No. 3). .
Mahomes realized the result, tweeted an emoji from a pencil and a notepad.
Although he’s clearly not the fourth-best player in the league, the location is understandable, given the mechanics of the annual roster process. During the previous season, a large number of players were asked to list the top 20 players in the NFL. During the 2019 season, Mahomes did not have the same sizzle as he had in 2018, thanks in large part to the fact that he missed several games with a knee injury.
In fact, Jackson and Wilson spent much of November and December vying for MVP votes, with Jackson emerging as the clear choice when the Ravens took first place in the AFC, powered by a 14-2 record. Jackson became the unanimous MVP and the near-unanimous All-Pro quarterback.
But those nuances are easily lost in a compiled roster before Mahomes caused the Chiefs to win their first Super Bowl in 50 years and be revealed when training camps open. The end result is a slight disdain from Mahomes, and he’s sure to give him a healthy kick in the butt at a time when kicking in the butt would be hard to find.
It’s not that Mahomes needed a kick in the butt, but his reaction shows it can’t hurt, as the Chiefs try to avoid the various dynamics that have kept a team from repeating as a Super Bowl champion since the Patriots won two in a row between 2003. and 2004.
