While Star Trek‘s TV offers are thriving, the movies sit in a little rut. Following the plans for a fourth Abrams helmet Trek falling apart, the studio did not have much clarity about what to do with the property, with several film ideas, including one famously inspired by Quentin Tarantino, was driven, tentatively put into production, and then lost in the ether of the production hell.
With recently appointed president of film group Emma Watts, formerly of Fox, now taking the helm at Paramount, that seems set to change for the better. As reported by Deadline, one of Watts’ top priorities at her new job is to figure out what, exactly, to do about it Star Trek films. Per these plans it seems the Trek film written and slated to be directed by Noah HawleyLegion, Fargo) is pending. While Hawley is still committed to the project, it is primarily a break, as the project was written by Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) who was simultaneously set to be directed by Quentin Tarantino, although he is no longer attached to the project as of the Deadline report.
What does that leave? Well, not making one Star Trek movie is not an option, which means you get back to the idea of bringing back the original reboot for another action, though probably without Abrams. That original project was discontinued due to contract disputes and the high cost of star power in the franchise. But with Star Trek a bigger name on television than it has been in decades, Paramount has a strong incentive to find the money and get something sooner rather than later.
