Carries twenty-one. 124 yards. Two touchdowns. Many thought Derrick Henry’s state line would look like this on Sunday night, not that of AJ Dillins. After not having much of a role in the offense until the first 15 weeks of the season, Green Bay Packers Rookie chose a formidable stage to perform a breakout running behind. Snowy over the Tennessee Titans in the 16th week, everything was together for Dillon to win the statement.
Upon entering the game, Dill carried 24 for 114 yards, no touchdowns and one catch for 16 yards. The expectation of a deal on year 7 was not fair at all. It was originally a redshirt year in which he could relax from crime and learn from Aaron Jones and Jamal Williams. In limited reps it averaged 8.8 yards per carry, which is by no means terrible. However, he still could not quite find his feet inside the crime.
All of this changed this week when Jamal Williams, a quadriceps injury ruled out, possibly providing D Dillon with a small opening. However, even after Williams is out, Jones will continue to warrant most touches.
Dillon has been on the field for less than 10 percent of offensive pics in 2020 and was also listed as a reserve / COVID-19 for a period of five weeks at the beginning of the year. After the game, Aaron Rogers admitted that he was not sure Dillon would be back all this season. Clearly, Dillon wouldn’t have missed out on a great opportunity if he had introduced himself.
On the opening drive to Y0 Yards and Touchdown, Dillon did not have a carry and was not on the field for a single play. Jones started the game with three carry for 20 yards, moving to another solid performance.
The second drive was designed by head coach Matt LaFleur for Dillon. It didn’t start exactly because its first two carriages totaled two yards. Dill finally got things done with a six-yard rush and another nine yards. If the Titans hadn’t paid the third-place finisher to lengthen the drive, those two carriages would never have happened. If he had never been fined, Dill would have had a very different night.
Later, disrupted by security Darnell Savage set up a short field situation for the Packers ’offense. However, on the first play, Rogers threw a ball in the direction of Jones who was confronted and landed awkwardly. Jones dropped out of the game and was replaced by Dillon.
On that next play, Dillon reached the middle for a 14-yard increase. When Green Bay burned in their third touchdown, Dylan was shown back.
When the Packers drafted Dillon, the prospects of hand-wringing him in cold December football were the first few images that came to mind. Against Tennessee, he did just that. During the third quarter, Dill burst through a hole, and forced a missed hull for a 30-yard touchdown run, to beat one man.
The long score would definitely turn off a great night for Dillon, but it wasn’t quite complete. The latter will give another touch of a career while holding the ile glow of the Titans players on his shoulders. At the training camp, we saw and heard pictures of the power of Deal On, but Sunday night was the first time everyone had witnessed it.
He showed that Green Bay could have a bright future. He also showed why the Packers are over him. In response to Dylan’s Day 2 selection, many featured LaFleur’s time with Henry from the season he spent in Tennessee. Comparing the physical size and style of play of the two players, the Packers hope that Dylan Henry may have his own version. Sunday night really provided some hope that it would come true.
Dill played a better game between the two as Henry finished the game with 23 carry and no touchdowns for 98 yards. Right now, there’s nothing to say about what Dillon’s role will be after Jones and Williams return to perfect health. For Green Bay, having three viable options running back is a big problem.
LaFleur, “It’s very exciting when you have three backs.” Said. “Those three guys, for me, are just the beginning in this league.”
The performance may come down as Dillon’s most memorable from his rookie season, but the Packers will be happy if that happens. At the very least, Dill showed that the offense could still play with him at a high level as a primary running back.
