After a decade in Minnesota, could Everson Griffen join a division rival?
NFL network informant Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the Green Bay Packers are among the teams that have expressed interest in signing Griffen, according to a source informed of the situation. The interest is mutual, according to Rapoport.
The Vikings veteran ditched his contract in February. In March, the parties interrupted the contract talks, as it seemed that the passer would be passing Minnesota.
At 32, Griffen remains a productive player, winning a Pro Bowl offer in 2019. He compiled eight sacks and 41 tackles in 15 games last season.
Green Bay would be an interesting landing place for Griffen. Pairing the veteran with ZaDarius Smith, Preston Smith and Rashan Gary would provide more quick pass options for defensive coordinator Mike Pettine.
The Vikings haven’t been completely offside to bring the veteran passer back. Coach Mike Zimmer was asked Saturday during a Zoom call with reporters about the prospects of bringing Griffen back.
“I don’t know,” said Zimmer. “He texted me the other day saying congratulations (for the contract extension) and stuff like that. I would love to have him back, he’s always been one of my boys, so if that happens, it would be great, but I don’t know where is that now. “
Zimmer not only couldn’t catch her boy. It could hurt even more to see him sign with the Packers, the division’s rival.
