This marks the sixth permanent Mass Vaccine Clinic as part of a plan to build a COVID-19 vaccine city as soon as possible in the city’s traditionally underworld neighborhood.
The Philadelphia Department of Health is committed to city-run clinics that can vaccinate 500 people a day.
The Athletic Association site only started as an appointment, but officials later said it would remain open and available for walk-in k-ups.
The site of the Pemaslavania Convention Center, operated by FEMA, is ending walk-up availability on Monday night as the site begins its second dose phase. Officials at the venue are urging people to try for a walk-up appointment by 8pm, the restrictions do not apply.
After Monday, there will be no walk-up appointments, but Furley says changes could occur, depending on the supply.
FEMA spokeswoman Charlie Ellison said: “In response to the huge amount of walk-up traffic we have, just yesterday we exceeded our 6,000 (one day) number by about 6,400 additional doses.” “To minimize digital segmentation, Citi plans to ensure open access and walk-ups.”
Many senior citizens who spoke to Action News on Monday said they were grateful for the local site because it was so difficult for them to reach the convention center.
“It was easy,” said Jacqueline Martin of Pensport. “Everything was efficient. The city called me and asked me if I had any way to get here? They said they could send a bus and pick me up and take me back home.”
Furley added the importance of smaller sites.
“Overall, these sites run by the health department represent a significantly lower percentage of vaccinations. The largest providers are hospitals and our Center City vaccination centers and pharmacies.” “However, these neighborhood clinics reach a population that is important, and they may not be able to build them on those sites.”
