The chances of getting a follow-up to Ori And The Will Of The Wisps were drastically reduced when Moon Studios signs a new multi-format deal.
When Microsoft started its recent spending, buying independent developers to bolster its own first-party lineup, many were surprised at some of the options, which included relatively unknown studios like the maker of We Happy Few Compulsion Games.
But what was equally surprising was that Microsoft did not acquire Ori And The Blind Forest developer Moon Studios, considering that the two Ori games have become the most critically acclaimed exclusives on Xbox One.
When we spoke to Moon Studios earlier in the year, they weren’t attracted to the subject, but noted that Microsoft owns Ori’s IP, not them, which means they could continue making new games without Moon Studios. Which is something they may have to do now …
Private Division, the independent label founded by 2K, which has already released articles such as The Outer Worlds and Disintegration, has subscribed to Moon Studios for a ‘new action RPG’.
Moon Studios is only a small developer, so it seems highly unlikely that they will be able to make two major games at once, implying that a third Ori is not in the cards.
Private Division has also subscribed the creators of OlliOlli and Laser League Roll7 for ‘flow status games’, whatever that means.
And finally, the lesser-known League of Geeks is working on a ‘new video game and intellectual property’, after previously creating the digital board game Armello.
It doesn’t seem like any of the games are expected to come out before mid-2022, but even that doesn’t leave enough time for Moon Studios to make another Ori game.
However, at the recent Xbox Games Showcase, they announced a specific new Xbox Series X version of Will Of The Wisps, which will have to convince fans for now.
