Oregon reports 7 new coronavirus deaths, tying state record

The Oregon Health Authority announced seven new deaths from the new coronavirus on Tuesday, tying the state record for most reported deaths in a single day. The record was previously set on April 28 and repeated on July 14.

Those who died were between the ages of 47 and 88, including a 59-year-old Washington County man with no underlying medical conditions. Public health officials say 269 people in the state are now known to have died from COVID-19.

Public health officials also announced 299 new cases Tuesday, bringing the total number of confirmed or suspected cases to 15,139. The record for most cases was set last Thursday, with 437 new infections reported.

New cases have increased since late May, about two weeks after Governor Kate Brown began to lift her stay-at-home orders for most counties in the state and allowed them to reopen. Public health officials say part of the increase is due to more testing, but the disease is also spreading much more rapidly as people have begun to socialize with family and friends and have ignored safety precautions, such as wearing masks. and keep at least six feet away from people who are not members of their own homes.

A question asking for clarification was not immediately answered.
