With bars in many California counties closing once again due to an increase in COVID-19 cases, San Luis Obispo County public health officials are encouraging people to celebrate at home this weekend of 4 of July.
Although bars in San Luis Obispo County have not been asked to close, health officials say it could still happen, and some companies choose to do so anyway.
SLO County Public Information Officer Michelle Shoresman says: “We have not closed bars in this county. There are seven counties that the governor ordered to close bars. We have not taken that action yet, although it is not to say we won” t take that step. “
A recent increase in COVID-19 cases in the county is attributed to the spread of the community, and local health authorities said that includes people who reported going to bars.
This has created a concern for the upcoming holiday weekend.
“We are really discouraging leisure travel in general, and with the July 4 holiday, we are encouraging everyone to celebrate with their immediate family,” Shoresman said.
Scott Barnes, a county resident, agrees and said that people should stay home.
“I know that people are going to come to the beach, go to bars and restaurants, or buy alcohol and do their thing, but they must realize that they need to protect themselves and protect everyone around them,” Barnes said.
The Mccarthy Irish Pub in downtown San Luis Obispo announced its plan to be closed all day Saturday.
Others remain open but say they have security measures in place.
Luna Red Bar and Grill manager Peter Neundorfer says they will remain open this coming Saturday.
“A little concerned about the influx, but we definitely have a system here to help control the volume we have through the gates to ensure everyone can be safe,” Neundorfer said.
For those who decide to stay home to celebrate, Luna Red will offer take-out options, such as cocktail mixers and burger packs.
“We hope that will help some people looking to have a good time this May 4 to enjoy that experience in a place a little more comfortable for them,” said Neundorfer.
“Celebrate 4th, be outside, enjoy your family but stay away from those big gatherings, especially the gatherings and bars inside and any number of other places inside would be part of that,” Shoresman said.
The Health Department encourages people to wear masks and follow orders to stay home, especially if they are not feeling well.
