Onions sold back in popular west coast grocery shopping

Progressive Produce LLC said Monday a limited number of red and yellow onions were sold at Trader Joe’s and Ralphs stores in the West.

Thomson International Inc., the company in California identified by the Food and Drug Administration as the likely source of the outbreak, delivered hit onions to Progressive Produce, the company said.

Progressive Produce said that the recalled onions are normally sold separately in bulk containers and that its red onions have a PLU sticker called Pacific Gold.

The company said the recalled red onions were sold at Trader Joe’s locations in Arizona, California, Utah and Nevada. The hit yellow onions were only sold in California at Ralphs stores.

No other products sold by Progressive Produce have been recalled.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says Salmonella Newport sick 640 people and sent 85 to the hospital. There are no deaths linked to the outbreak, which was identified on July 10 and has since grown.

The agency said the illnesses began between mid-June and mid-July.
