A one-year-old boy and a ten-year-old girl were among the 14 people shot to death in Chicago over the weekend, 38 more were injured.

Later that night, another eight-year-old girl was injured by a stray bullet that shot through the window and grazed her head while sitting on a sofa at her home in the Englewood neighborhood. She was taken to the hospital and is stable, according to police. No arrests have been made.

A 21-year-old man was shot while jogging in Gresham, south of Chicago, and taken to the hospital for treatment.

A 31-year-old woman was seriously injured Sunday after being shot in Rogers Park, south of Chicago, police reports said.

The boy’s mother, Myesha James, said: “We want justice, but that will not bring him back.”

On Friday, President Donald Trump wrote a letter to Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoo.t and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker raising the issue of gun violence in Chicago.

He wrote: “Although I have been encouraged to see reductions in crime nationwide in recent years, I have been horrified by the continued violence in this great American city,” Trump wrote.

‘His lack of leadership on this important issue continues to fail the people he has sworn to protect. I am concerned that it is another example of their lack of commitment to vulnerable citizens who are victims of this violence and the lack of respect for men and women in law enforcement.

Ms Lightfoot replied on Twitter: “I don’t need leadership lessons from Donald Trump,” accusing Trump of ‘use the victims of armed violence in our city to earn cheap political points, cast racist rhetoric and ignore the impact of COVID in this country … It is despicable, unpleasant and too typical.’
