“There were verbal disagreements between the victim and the suspect, and the suspect shot the victim,” said John Elder, a spokesman for the Minneapolis Police Department.
Police responded in the area of 38th Street East and Chicago Avenue, Elder said, adding that the shots were fired using an automated sound detection system called Shotspotter.
When they arrived at the memorial site, “officers met at the scene with little interference,” the elder said. But did not elaborate further.
He was then told that the victim had already been taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The name of the victim has not been released.
Elder said the shooter has not been identified or has been apprehended, and police are seeking public help in locating the gateway vehicle, described as a light-colored suburb, from the damage caused by the shooting.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact Minnesota’s crime stoppers,” Elder said. “All tips are anonymous and are eligible for any financial rewards for providing information for arrests and convictions.”
He added that the investigation is ongoing.
