One in five patients with coronavirus develops a mental illness within 90 days

New research suggests that people who survive COVID-19 infections are at higher risk of developing mental illness.

This Data, Published in the journal Lancet Psychiatry, suggests that 20 percent of monitored COVID-19 patients are diagnosed with a mental disorder such as anxiety, depression, or insomnia within 90 days of diagnosis.

The researchers analyzed data from approximately 69 million people, of whom 62,354 were COVID-19 patients. The goal was to see if the risk of mental illness following an infection was higher in COWID-19 patients as opposed to other health problems.

The results suggest that the majority of post-sick diagnoses of anxiety disorder, insomnia, and dementia were found in COVID-19 patients, as were patients who were ill with influenza or other respiratory tract infections, similar to COVID-19.

Anxiety disorder following infection was the most common diagnosis, with dementia occurring only in patients over 65 years of age.

More severe mental disorders, which are more likely to compromise sharply in everyday cognition, were generally less common.

To rule out any hidden variables that could alter the findings, such as people with a potential mental illness who are at increased risk of covid-1 infection, the researchers looked at a predetermined study. Limited associations between mental illness and COVID-19 sensitivity were discovered.

The study, funded by the National Institute for Health Research, concluded that while the data are preliminary, the findings encourage further analysis of the psychological effects of coronavirus.

“Survivors of COVID-19 have an increased risk of psychiatric sciatica, and psychiatric diagnosis may be an independent risk factor for COVID-19,” the authors wrote.
